Flea and Tick Prevention: Seresto Collar!

Inexpensive and easy to administer. This simple and easy flea and tick prevention method is probably the most effective per cost value I’ve seen yet!

It’s common for veterinarians to recommended this product, especially here in MD, because all of north American tick varieties can be found here, along with fleas, heart worms and other dog loving parasites! But no matter the parasite density, its better safe, than sorry.

Severe discomfort and suffering occurs if sufficient prevention methods aren’t taken! This area has a minimum of 8 warm (above freezing) months out of the year, for parasites to make hosts out of our pets. It can take less than a week for our pets’ to become infested once contact is made, then throughout our home, and finally, feasting on humans … (… Happy Halloween)!

Tick and flea infestations occur commonly when we think its too cold for them to be active because we will stop actively protecting our pets. However, the rule of thumb is that if it’s below 32 degrees for a week, then those pesky parasites are safely underground borrowed until the next above 32 degree warm day arrives. However, why wait until its warm, to use protection? Nature works in mysterious ways, and I don’t think you should risk a parasite coming out sooner than we think they should! Once that parasite is in the house and lands on your unprotected pet, it can thrive which is how infestations occur - right under our noses! That’s why year round protection is important! Even if you see a flea/tick on your pet, and kill it - chances are it’s too late to stop the disease that the parasite/s has/ve already transmitted. A trip to your veterinarian should be scheduled in that case.

Some common statements pet parents say why they don’t use parasite prevention methods:

Parent: “Oh but my pet never goes farther than our gate!

My answer: “Fleas and ticks, are definitely small enough to…go through your gate…”

Parent: “He only goes outside to pee and poop.

My answer: “Parasites can make contact with your pet in a split second. Even with mostly indoor or completely indoor pets; if you, the parent, go outside for a split second for anything, you can pick them up on the soles of our shoes and track them in your home, where they can feed on our pets and multiply!”

Compared to liquid and oral administering types which only lasts 1-3 months (type/brand dependent), adding this product to your pet protection arsenal is simply a no brainer.

There was a client that admitted to me and my resident DVM that the fleas were actually biting her! Her Pomeranian was full of fleas and she apparently had other pets at her home, who, would be safe to assume, also had fleas because the Pomeranian she brough in was totally infested! When fleas become too many on one pet, they search for other hosts, and then jump on us when they need an even bigger host!

As with all new products, and each pet reacting differently, please update your veterinarian and monitor pet to see how they react to your new method of pet protection!
